This book tells the story of a middle-aged man who returns to his childhood home to attend a funeral. Although the house he lived in is long gone, he is drawn to the farm at the end of the lane. In the farm he finds a farmhouse and meets a woman which own that. The middle-aged man then reminisces about his childhood that he went through a lot of things in that farmhouse with a little girl named Lettie.

Lettie, who is the daughter of the farmhouse owner, has a wise beyond her years. Even forty years ago, she promised a seven years old boy to protect him from Ursula Monkton, no matter what.
